SAIH Seminar: HT21 Wk 6: On Violence or the Civil War of 1947 and the Importance of Indian Political Thought

Convener: Zobia Haq

Speaker: Shruti Kapila (University of Cambridge)

Shruti Kapila is University Lecturer in History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College. She is the editor of An Intellectual History for India (CUP, Cambridge 2010) and the co-editor of Political Thought in Action: The Bhagavad Gita and Modern India (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2014). Her writing has appeared in leading academic journals such as Past and Present and Modern Intellectual History and in international publications such as Financial Times, India Today, and Prospect. In her upcoming book Violent Fraternity in the Indian Age (Princeton: Princeton University Press, and Penguin Random House, India 2021) Kapila argues that it was in India that modern political languages were remade through a revolution that defied fidelity to any exclusive ideology, and explores how the foundational questions of politics were addressed in the shadow of imperialism to create both a sovereign India and the world’s first avowedly Muslim nation, Pakistan.
