The White Rose South Asia Network is inviting abstracts for its inaugural graduate workshop to be held at the University of Leeds on Monday 22nd May 2017 on the theme of Futures Past: South Asia Now and Then.

This one-day interdisciplinary workshop will bring together graduate students from across the arts, humanities and social sciences whose research focuses upon South Asia or South Asian networks and diaspora in any time period or locale. The broad theme is intended to facilitate debate on diverse topics which could include but are not limited to: pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial histories; migration, mobilities, and diaspora; literature, arts and films; contemporary politics and society; gender studies; and religious and cultural studies.

We encourage submissions from graduate students at both early and late stages of their research degrees who wish to present their work in an engaging and supportive environment.  Selected contributors will be required to submit papers of approximately 5,000-8,000 words in advance of the workshop. Each paper will be summarised and discussed by another graduate student and an academic from the White Rose South Asia Network before time is given to the author to respond to the points and questions raised.

Please email abstracts to whiterosesouthasiagraduate@gmail.com by 15 January 2017. We will reimburse speakers for return economy travel to Leeds (up to £50) and one night of accommodation for those coming from further afield (up to £50) - more information will be provided. Lunch will be provided on the day for all attendees and speakers will be invited to a post-conference meal in Leeds.
