Panel - History and Politics of Labour and Welfare in India
Convenors: Louise Tillin (King’s College London) and Karuna Dietrich Wielenga (University of Oxford)

This panel will bring together scholars working on the politics of state-building and welfare in the mid-twentieth century in India including the development of policies relating to labour, social policy and education. The panel will explore the mid-decades of the twentieth century as a crucial period of thinking about the relationship between the state, markets and citizens. In this period, new policies were implemented with long term ramifications for social and economic development, helping to structure labour markets, define eligibility for social policies and shape the relations between employers and employees. The panel will take a long historical perspective, and is also open to those whose research focuses on the longer term effects of policies adopted in earlier periods under colonialism.
