I teach at the Oxford Department of International Development, mainly on the DPhil and MPhil in Development Studies. My optional course on the Indian State is open to students of Modern South Asian Studies.
My research and teaching interests are centred on the politics of development, the contemporary transformation of postcolonial states and governance, and on the politics and society of contemporary India.
My book Liberalisation, Hindu Nationalism and The State: A Biography of Gujarat was published by Oxford University Press in 2012. My new book Unfixed Land: The Making of Land and The Making of India is forthcoming, also with OUP. I regularly comment on Indian politics and current affairs in the Indian and international media.
