Seminar at Oslo University on Tuesday 6 September by Karin Kapadia

Karin Kapadia, CSASP Associate, is due to give a seminar  at Oslo University on Tuesday 6th September on the subject of the forthcoming book she has co-edited: Dalit Women: Vanguard of an alternative politics

In India’s contemporary context, where neoliberal forms of capitalism are entangled with proliferating articulations of Hindutva-inspired nationalism, Dalit women are engaged in a number of everyday forms of political expression. Drawing on the work of Gramscian feminists Gillian Hart and Himani Bannerji, Kapadia argues that we need to see these female activities and discourses as valid and important manifestations of an alternative politics, and that we need to focus our attention on their everyday praxis in ‘the slippages, openings and contradictions of historically specific forms of bourgeois hegemony’ because their multi-modal praxis is ‘crucial to challenging and transforming the conditions of subalternity’.
